Coronavirus Update – HMRC briefing on their continuing support 27/08/2020

HM Revenue & Customs have issued a briefing paper explaining how they intend to provide support over the coming months. We particularly draw your attention to the following:

-Taxpayers are expected to file returns on time and should prepare to meet future tax obligations.

-Penalty notices are being issued to those not meeting their obligations, but HMRC will take a sympathetic approach to those struggling to pay their tax or file their returns on time.

-The impacts of Covid-19 will be accepted as a reasonable excuse, but it is vital that HMRC are contacted if a deadline cannot be met.

-Debt collecting activities have resumed, initially focussing on those least affected by Covid-19.

-HMRC are taking a compassionate and common-sense approach to those with tax debt or those concerned about meeting tax obligations. They are encouraged to contact HMRC to see what support can be provided (see link below).
