Who needs to file a self assessment tax return?
You may need to complete a self assessment tax return if you are:
- Self-employed as a sole trader or freelancer
- A company director with additional income that must be declared
- A landlord receiving rental income from UK or overseas property
- An individual with significant untaxed income, investments or capital gains
- A higher earner who is required to report additional tax liabilities to HMRC
HMRC’s rules vary depending on your circumstances. Our team can advise whether you need to submit a return and what information is required.
When is the self assessment deadline?
The deadline for submitting your online self assessment tax return and paying any tax owed is 31 January following the end of the tax year.
Missing this deadline can result in penalties and interest charges from HMRC.
What are the penalties for a late filing?
If your tax return is filed after the deadline, HMRC will normally issue an initial £100 penalty, even if no tax is due.
If the delay continues, additional penalties are applied, including daily charges and further penalties after six and twelve months.
